Regular Maintenance

Should I leave my device on?

Servers: Yes, but be sure you are using Managed IT Service.

Entertainment, Personal Computers, and Laptops: No, shut them down when you're not using them. Perform a regular Computer Checkup.

Workstations: No, shut them down when you're not using them, unless it's managed by a support firm or IT department.

Phones, Tablets: Leave them on when you have access to power, and activate Airplane Mode when you're not using them.

Smart Devices: Use a Google Home router or a router managed by an IT service. Keep smart devices on a separate secured network from the one you use for private secured activity. Ensure the guest network uses "AP (Client) Isolation".

Routers: Leave them on at all times, but be sure they're not using common passwords or outdated firmware.

Printers: If the printer is used by one nearby computer, turn it off when you're not using it. If the printer is shared between computers or away from other computers, leave it on.

Thermostats: Leave smart thermostats on. Set programmable thermostats to Away when you leave the house, and to comfortable sleeping and waking temperatures. Replace simple or mechanical thermostats with a smart thermostat.

Everything else: If it doesn't have connectivity to other devices, turn it off when you're not using it. If it does connect to other devices and you're not using it, turn it off or disconnect its connectivity unless it's managed by a support firm.
